American McGee is the game designer of American McGee’s Alice, and its sequel Alice: Madness Returns and many other titles. He is also known as one of the influential software engineers involved with games such as Doom II and Quake. He is based in Shanghai and Founder/CEO of Mysterious. The Mysterious company do much more than game design – Mysterious also produce fashion and art as well as games. Information about Mysterious can be found at mysterious.americanmcgee.com. Alice’s Nightmare in Wonderland with Jonathan Green. Friday 27 March 2020 at The Art Workers’ Guild, WC1N 3AT. This event was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Chris Riddell in Wonderland: An Illustrator in Pursuit of Alice. The distinguished illustrator, political cartoonist and former Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, talking and drawing about the challenges and rewards of creating a new illustrated edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass for publication in 2020.

Our next meeting is on Friday 28 February 2020: Sir John Tenniel: Illustrating Alice. An illustrated talk by Dr Leo John De Freitas.

Lewis Carroll in Whitby: two talks 18 and 20 March

Wednesday 18 March at 2pm:

Lewis Carroll: photographer of Victorian celebrities (including the Pre-Raphaelites) and of notable Whitby families.

A few of the men and women who had personal or creative significance for Carroll, and with examples of why Carroll was retrospectively called ‘the most outstanding photographer of children in the nineteenth century’.

Friday 20 March at 5.45pm:

Once Upon a Time in Oxford (and Whitby): the Origins of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland.

Carroll’s earliest published work – long before Alice – was inspired by Whitby. It was a place he revisited many times, as too did John Tenniel’s fellow Punch illustrator and Carroll acquaintance, George Du Maurier.

Both talks will be by LCS trustee Mark in association with Whitby Museum’s ongoing ‘Alice in Whitby’ exhibition, which reimagines Alice through the Museum’s costume collection. Everyone welcome
