Why join?
There is more to Charles Dodgson than his Lewis Carroll persona and authorship of Alice in Wonderland: he was a mathematician, a logician, a poet, a photographer and much more. Whatever your interest in Lewis Carroll, whether you’re a serious academic or an inquisitive amateur, you’ve come to the right place as we celebrate every aspect of his life and imagination, and everyone is welcome.
Access to Research Material and Information
The Society acts as a pool of knowledge and resources. Members gain access to a vast amount of information and expertise, which might be difficult to obtain otherwise.
The Society’s archive is held at the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst and can be consulted by appointment.
What do you get?
Every quarter we publish our newsletter, Bandersnatch, with news and reviews. We also publish the Carrollian journal once or twice a year with longer articles and original research. You’ll receive copies of our publications from the time you join, and you can read earlier publications in our members-only digital library.
Our regular emails to members will let you know about upcoming events and exhibitions, including those not organised by the Society but with a Carrollian or Alice flavour.
We meet online and in person with knowledgeable and entertaining speakers. Previous events have included exclusive film screenings and behind the scenes visits to exhibitions. The Society also organises speakers to give free talks on Alice’s Day in Oxford which takes place on the first or second Saturday in July each year and is an opportunity for members to meet and socialise.
Members get discounts at some shops.
You don’t have to be a member to follow us on Facebook but that is a great way to learn about what’s going on and join a friendly and knowledgeable online community.

Gift Aid
If you are a UK taxpayer, please consider making a Gift Aid declaration.
The Lewis Carroll Society is a registered UK charity so we can reclaim Gift Aid from the tax you pay. The declaration requires your name and address, including your postcode, so HMRC can confirm you pay UK tax. You don’t need to sign the declaration and a digital version is fine. The easiest way of returning it is to photograph or scan it and attach it to an email to membership@lewiscarrollsociety.org.uk
Please notify the Membership Secretary if you:
- Want to cancel your declaration
- Change your name or home address
- No longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains.
