The Lewis Carroll Society The Lewis Carroll Society was founded in 1969 to bring together people with an interest in Charles Dodgson, to promote interest in his life and works, and to encourage research. The Society has an international membership of scholars, writers, collectors and enthusiasts who simply enjoy reading the books. Members include Anne Clark Amor, Michael Bakewell, Angelica Carpenter, Morton Cohen, Colin Ford, Martin Gardner, Selwyn Goodacre, Karoline Leach, Charlie Lovett, Stephanie Lovett Stoffel, Edward Wakeling and many other key figures who have written about Lewis Carroll. The society is a registered charity, nominally based in London, but with members all around the world, and is run entirely by volunteers. As a charity, we are committed to promoting the educational benefits associated with the study of Lewis Carroll's life and works, but without losing sight of the fact that the works are there to be read and enjoyed. Regular Publications All members recieve the following regular publications: The Carrollian The Society's scholarly journal, which features articles about all aspects of Dodgson's life and works. The journal has become well-established over the years and is now the leading journal on its subject. 60 or 64 pages. Issued twice each year. Currently running slightly late, but we expect to make up some ground during 2007 and to be back on schedule in 2008. Lewis Carroll Review In depth reviews of all the major publications relevant to Charles Dodgson and his world, written by reviewers with a specialist knowledge. Between 16 and 32 pages. Issued 3 or 4 times each year. Bandersnatch A lively quarterly newsletter containing details of the Society's activities, and announcements about future events, merchandise, press coverage, etc. Between 24 and 36 pages. Issued 4 times each year. Other Publications From time to time, the Society produces other publications which it distributes free to members. Other Benefits of Membership Regular Meetings The Society holds at least three meetings each year in London. These usually feature a guest speaker but sometimes take the form of panel discussions, or collections of short papers. In addition we organise regular day visits to place with a Carroll connection, such as Oxford or Guildford. Every two years we organise a residential Summer Event which lasts two or three days, based in a town with a strong Carroll connection, such as Daresbury, Oxford, Croft, Eastbourne, etc. Publications for Sale The Society has published a variety of books on different aspects of Dodgson's life and works. These are offered to members, sometimes exclusively or at a discount. Various other bought-in publications are offered from time to time. The Society's publication of the unabridged and annotated editions of Lewis Carroll's Diaries is one of our leading projects. Access to Research Material and Information The Society acts as a pool of knowledge and resources. So by joining the Society, members gain access to a vast amount of information and expertise, which might be difficult to obtain otherwise. Printed Notification of New Events, Publications, etc. Although the Society does not make its mailing list available to other organisations, we will distribute advertising material if we feel that it is likely to be of benefit to members. In the past material has included invitations to exhibitions, auctions and other events, programmes and advertisements for festivals, theatre productions, etc. Other Good Reasons For Joining Over the years, the Society has been involved in a range of other activities. These include a series of major exhibitions, hosting international conferences, establishing the memorial stone in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner, repairing the graves of Lewis Carroll and other family members and a number of other projects. Many members feel that these are important activities and remain members of the Society in order to play their part - either by direct involvement or just by being members. Additional 'Family' Members Anyone living at the same address as a paid member may also be registered as a member by paying this nominal additional amount. Extra copies of the journals will not be sent, but the additional members are otherwise regarded as full members of the Society.
Sponsoring Members An optional rate for members who like to show their support for the Society by paying an extra amount each year. There are no specific benefits to the member, although anyone else at the same address may also be registered as a member. We have a number of member who pay at this rate and their additional contribution allows the Society to embark on more projects than it would otherwise be able to.
